Info about Mapping
Mapping
Mapping refers to the making of maps and often used in place of cartography. The Mapping term is also used geospatial data collection (like LIDAR mapping) but isn’t really mapping because an actual map is created through cartographic works, where it is determining the scale and level of detail and content of map database, entry criteria, and symbol specification for geospatial data and layout design. The acquisition of this data with geographic coordinates directly from terrain or imagery doesn’t mean mapping, but surveying is a better term.
There are a variety of different uses for mapping, and the type of mapping will defer in each instance. In the biology and neuroscience fields, there are two kinds of mapping; Gene Mapping which is the assignment of DNA fragments to chromosomes, and Brain Mapping, which is the set of techniques to study the brain and often used for doctors and brain surgeons to determine the best course of treatment which includes understanding the map of the brain in order to remove blood clots and tumors. Mapping is also used in mathematics such as the Mathematics Map, which is typically a synonym for function in various mathematical equations as well as Functional Predicate, which is a logical symbol that can be applies to an object term in order to produce another object term. If you remember from math class in high school, you may have remembered the term mapping on various occasions.
Several types of mapping exist in relation to the computing industry. These include Data Mapping, which is the data element mapping between two distinct data models, Level Design the creation of levels, locales, stages and missions for a video game and Memory-Mapped I/O, which is the hardware that is pretending to be memory. Additional types of computing mapping include Page Mapping, also known as paging, for virtual memory systems, Cache Mapping, which is the mapping of main memory locations into entries of a computing cache, Texture Mapping most commonly used in computer graphics, and Device Mapping which is the assignment of I/O devices to file descriptions, file names, file numbers and other details.
You may also notice several type of mapping used in logic, linguistic and psychology fields such as Conceptual Metaphor which is an understanding of one’s conceptual domain in terms of another conceptual domain, the Metaphor, which defines cross mapping across two or more seemingly unrelated subjects, and Analogy the inference from a particular to another particular. Operations research fields also use mapping such as the mapping of operational areas for the placement of resources in production, costs and pricing sites, the mapping of sales regions and the location of the customers for directing marketing efforts, the mapping of supply chains for the distribution and transportation and logistics, as well as mapping a strategic road map of sorts for execution of business plans. And finally, mapping is used in robotics including the mapping of operational areas for the routing of robots on confined paths, Motion Planning, which is the planning of a map from exploration of viable routes, and Robotic mapping.
